These talented musicians bring a wealth of musical experience and excellence to everything they play, and have broad ranging expertise. Here is a little more about them.
Guitar, Banjo, Percussion
Derek Bodkin is a Santa Cruz area singer songwriter, who has recently relocated to the Monterey side of the bay. His eclectic musical history ranges from playing drums with some of the Bay Area’s hottest improv jam-fusion artists to playing fingerstyle guitar and bluegrass banjo with many shining folk rock artists touring today. He also performs and composes solo music and with his Hovering Breadcat Folk Ensemble.
Nik Bortolussi is a talented drummer and clarinet player who cut his chops on the jazz scene in Minneapolis, MN. Drumming professionally in various jazz bands around the Minneapolis area since he was sixteen, he now keeps the beat here on the peninsula with the Dave Holodiloff Band, delighting audiences with his stylish jazz clarinet and expressive drumming.
Equally at home playing Jazz, Bluegrass, Rock n Roll, and everything in between, Rick brings extensive experience and excellent harmony vocals. A longtime professional on the peninsula, Rick can also be seen with Andrea’s Fault and the Cachagua Playboys.
Michael is an accomplished pianist with a style that ranges from Jazz and Blues to Contemporary and Popular. He is currently working on his second album of original piano compositions. A student of Jonathon Lee, Michael succeeded Jonathon as the Grand Piano Man for the Big Sur International Marathon, and serenades runners annually at the Bixby Bridge.
Guitar & Banjo
Gene Mason’s extensive musical experience ranges from country guitar and bluegrass banjo to rock ‘n roll. He began with folk guitar in San Francisco then caught the rock ‘n roll wave and toured the country with his band People, sharing the stage with acts like Jimi Hendrix, the Who, the Doors, Janis Joplin, and Jefferson Airplane. He spent some time playing country guitar in the honkey tonks of Utah before settling here in Monterey where he specializes in bluegrass banjo.
Peter Mellinger is a phenom on the fiddle and a student at Pomona College. Among his many awards and accolades, Peter was the winner of the 2013 YMMC Concerto Competition, the 2014 Pomona College Concert Competition, four time member of the CODA All-State Honor Orchestra and three time member of the California All-State High School Orchestra.
Saxophone & Keyboards
Gary Meek is a talented mulit-instrumentalist and composer. He studied at the Grove School of Music and the LA Jazz Workshops during the early 80s, has toured worldwide on keyboard with Dionne Warwicks, and collaborated with Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, and Jeff Lorber. His style combines Latin and Funk with jazz improvisations.
Kenny Stahl is a jazz flutist, seasoned recording artist, and composer, and one of the hottest jazz flute performers today. Raised in Chicago, Kenny has studied and performed many forms of jazz, from the mysteries of Monk to the preludes of Bach, with stops along the way for Latin, be-bop, Brazilian and Contemporary and played principal flute in the Miami and Reno Symphonies.
Clarinet & Saxophone
Stuart Reynolds is an award winning multi-instrumentalist and featured soloist. Playing the tenor, alto and soprano saxes as well as clarinet and bass clarinet, Stu plays a wide range of styles including Classical, Jazz, Blues, Funk, Pop, and World Beat Music, and has performed in concerts and clubs nation-wide.
Bill Sullivan has been playing bass on the Monterey Peninsula since 1979, and has played with bands of diverse styles in including Irish Celtic, Bluegrass, Blues, Rockabilly, Country, and more.
Steve Uccello is an upright/electric bassist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer who plays many genres including jazz, blues, folk, bluegrass, R & B, mariachi, and classical. In addition to being an accomplished sideman, Steve produces his own compositions, and is the band director for Palma High School in Salinas, California.
